My Pictures https://dougmccomas.webs.com/apps/photos/ My Pictures My wife Heidi at Fort Ticonderoga, New York. I have toured this site about a dozen times. It has been restored wonderfully. I would recommend seeing it in the fall. The fall colors of the surrounding hills are awesome. https://dougmccomas.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=188672605 188672605 Doug on the USS Constitution in Boston Harbor. https://dougmccomas.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=188672606 188672606 My wife Heidi in front of the house where U.S. Grant died near Saratoga Springs, New York, https://dougmccomas.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=188672607 188672607 In front of the Boston Monument to the 54th Massachusetts Regiment. Glory is a favorite movie of mine. https://dougmccomas.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=189587544 189587544 At the surrender site of the British Army north of Saratoga, New York. It is an impressive monument, but one of the vaults is empty. Dedicated to the hero of the Battle of Saratoga, Benedict Arnold, who later became a traitor. https://dougmccomas.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=189587546 189587546 The Hartenstein Hotel. Site of the 1st British Airborne Division Headquarters during Operation Market-Garden. A Bridge Too Far is another of my favorite war movies. https://dougmccomas.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=189587547 189587547 The bridge at Arnhem. The Germans eventually took it from the British, but they paid dearly for it. https://dougmccomas.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=189587548 189587548 At Bastogne, I found a Sherman tank that had fallen victim to a German PAK. What could have been a glancing shot, if the armor had been thicker, turned out to be lethal. https://dougmccomas.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=189587549 189587549 A German King Tiger captured by the Americans in the battle of the bulge. If you look closely at the tank's front mantle you can see the ineffectiveness of light anti-tank weapons on the beast. In the end, it ran out of gas and was abandoned by Kampfgruppe Pieper. https://dougmccomas.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=189587550 189587550 La Haye Saint. Wellington's linchpin of the British defense against Napoleon at Waterloo. The French took it, then the British took it back as the Prussians advanced on Napoleon's flank. https://dougmccomas.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=189587551 189587551 At Saint Mere-Eglise in Normandy. The man pointing was our Irish tour guide, he knew everything. I was impressed. The field behind him is where Lt. Winter's, with some of His Band of Brothers, knocked out four German 105's on D-Day. https://dougmccomas.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=189587553 189587553 Point Du Hoc. Perfectly preserved. A must see. https://dougmccomas.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=189587554 189587554 A German bunker on Omaha Beach. Situated to hit the beach with enfilading fire. The proximity of these three markers signify they were a tank crew and died together. About twenty feet away are three tombstones touching. That signifies the remains could not be identified, one from the other. https://dougmccomas.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=189587556 189587556 At the grave of the greatest tank ace in history, SS Hauptsturmfuhrer Micheal Whitmann. Credited with the destruction of 150 enemy vehicles. The British killed him, and he is buried in Normandy. About thirty seconds after this picture was taken, I dropped and broke my camera on his tombstone. His 151st kill. https://dougmccomas.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=189587557 189587557
